2013 BMW 640i Interior Seating
The BMW 6 Series Gran Coupe will be available as three models with engine size and drivetrain configuration being the major differentiator: 2013 BMW 640i Gran Coupe, 650i Gran Coupe and 650i xDrive Gran Coupe. We originally thought that BMW would debut the BMW 640i at next month’s Detroit Auto Show, but since the all-new 2012 3 Series is expected to make its public debut at Cobo Hall, we think BMW may hold off on the official BMW 640i Gran Coupe introduction until the Geneva Motor Show in March.

The first version of the Gran Coupe to arrive Stateside will be the BMW 640i Grand Coupe, powered by BMW’s N55 3.0-liter turbocharged inline six, good for 315 horsepower and 330 pound-feet of torque in this application. Shortly thereafter the BMW 640i, the 650i Gran Coupe will arrive, available with rear-wheel drive or xDrive all-wheel drive, boasting a twin-turbocharged 4.4-liter V8 tuned to 445 hp and 480 lb-ft.

Both BMW 640i and the 650i Gran Coupe engines are paired with BMW’s ZF-sourced eight-speed automatic transmission. The body-in-white for the BMW 640i models, and the convertible for that matter, is completely different. U.S.-spec curb weights have yet to be released but the BMW 640i Gran Coupe is listed to have a DIN weight (dry weight) of 1750 kg, or 3858 lb.

A technological highlight for the new BMW 640i Gran Coupe is the optional Adaptive LED Headlights first introduced on the BMW 6 Series Gran Coupe. The trademark BMW twin halo or ring lights in the 2013 BMW 640i headlight housing now implement the use of LEDs and the low and high beams are LEDs as well.

The bright white light swivels based on steering angle, yaw rate and the 2013 BMW 640i speed while adaptive Xenon headlights come standard. Other technologies available in the BMW 640i Gran Coupe are ConnectedDrive, rear-view camera, Surround View, Parking Assistant, BMW Night Vision with pedestrian recognition, Lane Departure Warning System and Active Blind Spot Detection, color head-up display, Bang & Olufsen audio system and BMW’s infamous iDrive.
The Seating 2013 BMW 640i
Judging from the photos, the 2013 BMW 640i interior is as luxuriously appointed and tech-laden as the rest of the BMW 6 Series Gran Coupe range – if not a little bit more so. Compared to its two-door counterpart, the 2013 BMW 640i Gran Coupe is a full 4.4 inches longer, and most of that added length benefits the rear passengers.

BMW’s literature states that the stretched 2013 BMW 640i has a 4+1 seating configuration, meaning there’s actually a quasi-usable seat between the two outboard rear positions. Thanks to a 4.4-in. gain in overall length from the BMW 640i (wheelbase is increased by 4.5 in.), the stretched roofline accommodating a B-pillar and an extra set of doors flows, giving the sedan a proportional look; an added benefit from the growth is the extra room in the rear passenger area.

Seating for the 2013 BMW 640i Gran Coupe is listed by BMW as 4+1 seating, meaning two full-sized adults and a child (at best) would fit aft of the driver. Having to straddle the center hump isn’t ideal but at least the 2013 BMW 640i seating is a passenger volume improvement over the 6 Series Coupe’s 2+2 seating.
