The 2011 Chevrolet Volt compact sedan is Chevy’s much-anticipated new plug-in battery/gasoline hybrid, featuring an electric-only mode with a range of up to 40 miles. GM calls the 2011 Chevrolet Volt an E-REV, for extended-range electric vehicle. The first 40 miles of range are powered by a 16-kwh lithium-ion battery; the battery can be recharged by the Volt’s gasoline engine, which also runs on ethanol. This eliminates “range anxiety,” which GM says comes from the fear of a depleted battery. For recharging at the wall, the Chevrolet Volt 2011 can be recharged in a standard 120-volt household outlet in about eight hours; on a 240-volt line, the Volt can be recharged in three hours. GM estimates a recharge of the Chevrolet Volt 2011 will cost less than a cup of coffee.

GM admits the Chevrolet Volt 2011 has evolved from the evocative concept shown at the 2007 Detroit auto show, but it says many cues have come over from the striking concept version. The closed front grille of the car is one hallmark that’s carried over visibly into the production version, while the tapered corners up front and clean lines at the back (including a small spoiler) are styled to manage the Volt’s aerodynamics. Still, there is no denying the Volt’s technological promise. Most importantly, the Chevrolet Volt 2011 has the ability to keep on going when its battery runs down (say, on a road trip), whereas an all-electric vehicle like Nissan’s Leaf does not. If you want an intriguing yet practical taste of a greener automotive future, the 2011 Chevrolet Volt might be just what the General ordered. However, the term “your mileage may vary” has never been so true. In Edmunds range and fuel economy testing, we found the Chevrolet Volt 2011 Gas Mileage had an electricity range of between 30 and 39 miles in mixed driving. When the battery is depleted, the car’s mpg returned to 31.4 mpg.

GM estimates that the 2011 Chevrolet Volt will cost about two cents per mile to drive while under battery power compared to 12 cents per mile using gasoline priced at $3.60 per gallon. For an average driver who drives 40 miles per day (or 15,000 miles per year), this amounts to a cost savings of $1,500 annually. Using peak electric rates, GM estimates that an electrically driven mile in a 2011 Chevrolet Volt will be about one-sixth of the cost of a conventional gasoline-powered vehicle. The cost savings are even greater when charging during off-peak hours, when electric rates are cheaper. Now with the 2011 Chevrolet Volt MSRP priced from $40,280 for the base level, we can get a better idea of what it’s really like to live with.
